It's a sunset but it kinda reminds me of the way a volcano looks when it's not erupting and you just see the light from all that hot, angry, molten rock down below...
Technically I'm cheating because I didn't actually take this photo myself -- my brother did. But I was there!

oh this is beautiful, KwaZulu - Natal reminds me of a book I read a while back Chaka the Zulu. I have to go and hunt that book down

Children learn about him in primary school history (at least, they did when I was in primary school!).
There's a book called Chaka by Thomas Mofolo loosely based on King Shaka's life (haven't read it). Is that what you're talking about? The one thing that stands out in my memory from those lessons is being told how he used to make his warriors run barefoot over fields of thorns to toughen them up. I always thought that was awful!
This is another stunning picture. I would love to see the stars like that at sunset. In Washington State it's a rare occassion to see the stars during the 200+ days of rain we get.

It's an AMAZING sunset. What makes it so red? We sometimes have really red sunRISES but it is only if there is a lot of moisture in the air--the high humidity of summer, or when it is frosty in winter.
I love the Drakensburg--ever since I watched a program on those mountains I've been fascinated. Wonderful picture!

Hart, my completely honest answer.... I don't really know what makes it so red! (and I'm an ex-scientist... I should know this...)
Golden Eagle, the Drakensberg is one of my favourite places in the whole world -- so incredibly peaceful in the mountains, and so many wonderful childhood memories :-)
Wow, that's a great photo. I agree, could definitely be a volcano, I can imagine the lava blowing from the crater, just over the edge there. ;)
