Tara Maya's INITIATE, Book 1 of THE UNFINISHED SONG

Today I'm highlighting the first book in Tara Maya's THE UNFINISHED SONG series, INITIATE. It's a book I haven't read yet, but it sounds exciting, has a number of positive reviews, and it's FREE!

DEADLY INITIATION

A DETERMINED GIRL...
Dindi can't do anything right, maybe because she spends more time dancing with pixies than doing her chores. Her clan hopes to marry her off and settle her down, but she dreams of becoming a Tavaedi, one of the powerful warrior-dancers whose secret magics are revealed only to those who pass a mysterious Test during the Initiation ceremony. The problem? No-one in Dindi's clan has ever passed the Test. Her grandmother died trying. But Dindi has a plan.

AN EXILED WARRIOR...
Kavio is the most powerful warrior-dancer in Faearth, but when he is exiled from the tribehold for a crime he didn't commit, he decides to shed his old life. If roving cannibals and hexers don't kill him first, this is his chance to escape the shadow of his father's wars and his mother's curse. But when he rescues a young Initiate girl, he finds himself drawn into as deadly a plot as any he left behind. He must decide whether to walk away or fight for her... assuming she would even accept the help of an exile.

EXCERPT

Blue-skinned rusalki grappled Dindi under the churning surface of the river. She could feel their claws dig into her arms. Their riverweed-like hair entangled her legs when she tried to kick back to the surface. She only managed to gulp a few breaths of air before they pulled her under again.

She hadn't appreciated how fast and deep the river was. On her second gasp for air, she saw that the current was already dragging her out of sight of the screaming girls on the bank. A whirlpool of froth and fae roiled between two large rocks in the middle of the river. The rusalka and her sisters tugged Dindi toward it. Other water fae joined the rusalki. Long snouted pookas, turtle-like kappas and hairy-armed gwyllions all swam around her, leading her to the whirlpool, where even more fae swirled in the whitewater.

"Join our circle, Dindi!" the fae voices gurgled under the water. "Dance with us forever!"

"No!" She kicked and swam and stole another gasp for air before they snagged her again. There were so many of them now, all pulling her down, all singing to the tune of the rushing river. She tried to shout, "Dispel!" but swallowed water instead. Her head hit a rock, disorienting her. She sank, this time sure she wouldn't be coming up again.

"Dispel!" It was a man's voice.

Strong arms encircled her and lifted her until her arms and head broke the surface. Her rescuer swam with her toward the shore. He overpowered the current, he shrugged aside the hands of the water faeries stroking his hair and arms. When he reached the shallows, he scooped Dindi into his arms and carried her the rest of the way to the grassy bank. He set her down gently.

She coughed out some water while he supported her back.

"Better?" he asked.

She nodded. He was young--only a few years older than she. The aura of confidence and competence he radiated made him seem older. Without knowing quite why, she was certain he was a Tavaedi.

"Good." He had a gorgeous smile. A wisp of his dark bangs dangled over one eye. He brushed his dripping hair back over his head.

Dindi's hand touched skin--he was not wearing any shirt. Both of them were sopping wet. On him, that meant trickles of water coursed over a bedrock of muscle. As for her, the thin white wrap clung transparently to her body like a wet leaf. She blushed.

"It might have been easier to swim if you had let go of that," he teased. He touched her hand, which was closed around something. "What were you holding onto so tightly that it mattered more than drowning?"

Sex and Bad Language in New Adult Novels

I may be in the minority here, but I'm certain I'm not the only one who gets turned off by all the sex and coarse language in New Adult novels. I've read excerpts from quite a number of NA books, and to be honest, most of them are bordering on erotica. Now if I wanted to read about the explicit, graphic details of sexuals acts (which isn't something that's ever really appealed to me in books), I would buy an erotica novel. But that's not what I want. I want romance and a good story!

So when I read the description of Lee Strauss's SUN & MOON and saw the note at the bottom -- not erotica - no explicit sex or coarse language -- I thought, Yay! How refreshing for an NA novel! And better yet, I was offered an ebook in exchange for an honest review! (Love it when that happens for a book I've already decided I want to read ;-) ) So I'll soon be letting you know what I think of SUN & MOON.

In the meantime, if you want to read this book for yourself, the fantastic news is that it's NOW AVAILABLE! Yip, today is release day!

There’s an undeniable attraction between them, a gravitational pull they both struggle to resist. Katja knows she mustn’t fall in love with this handsome enigma. There’s something dark lurking beneath the surface. He could be dangerous.

On the day of Yssa’s death and rebirth, the god Apenth chose her as the Phoenix Prophetess.

Sea serpents and gods endanger the young prophetess’s journey and sour the omens. Yssa is cursed instead of blessed, and her duties at the Temple of Apenth prove it. She spends her days reading dusty scrolls, which does nothing to help her forget Tym, the boy back home. But the annoying yet gorgeous ferryman’s son Liam proves to be a distraction she can’t predict, even though he rarely leaves her alone for two sand grains.
Her boring temple life screeches to a halt when visions of her parents’ murders consume her. Yssa races across an ocean to stop the future. If she can’t change Fate, she’ll refuse to be the Phoenix Prophetess any longer. Fate, however, has other plans for her and the kingdom.

Yssa must either accept her destiny or fight to change Fate.

EXCERPT
Prologue, Reborn
by Cherie Reich

He couldn’t forget the council’s words or how they’d cursed his fifth Phoenix Prophetess. But visions of the Kingdom of Amora in flames flashed through his mind. He could taste the ashes, like burnt charcoal, and hear her people’s screams. The prophecy of the kingdom’s destruction leaked sour bile into his mouth. The other gods, including Kisa, the Queen of the Gods, might be willing to turn their backs on their loyal people for Fate, but he wasn’t.

There was also this infant in front of him. She reminded him of his daughter. His mortal family resided in the Underworld, but he couldn’t let this child.

“I have to save her.”

“Think of the consequences, my son.”

He had. They both knew the gods would find a way to curse him and this innocent child, but the price was worth saving the kingdom.

Ignoring his mother’s shrieks, Apenth leaned over the lifeless baby again. His lips pressed against her ashen forehead, so cold to the touch. Postera clawed at his arms, but he shoved away her hands. Nothing would stop him from completing Amora’s prophecy, protecting the city named after his love.

“You are mine, little one.” His hand pressed over her heart. Electric heat flowed from his glowing fingertips. They tingled, nearly burning his flesh, but his hand remained steady. Luminosity brightened around the child and him, further blocking out Postera’s pleas. The room filled with the blinding white light.

“Live.” He commanded, pleaded.

“No!” Postera screamed as the child’s life-thread ripped from his mother’s hand and joined the pulsing jewel on her belt. The piece sizzled, reattaching to the gemstone, and transformed to blood red.

The light imploded into the child. Her flesh glowed for a moment before the room’s shadows returned. A tiny strawberry-colored birthmark in the shape of a phoenix blossomed upon the flesh over her heart. The baby’s lungs filled with air, and a cry broke from her lips.

The Phoenix Prophetess was reborn.

Do you know about the EMBLEM OF ETERNITY series? & Release Day for WITCH FALL (Witch Song, #3)

There are gazillions of books out there in the world, so it makes total sense to keep finding new books I haven't come across before. The EMBLEM OF ETERNITY series is one example. I don't think I'd heard of these books until a few days ago. But ETERNAL STARLING sounds like an awesome book! If, like me, you don't know these books, read on to find out more :-)

(Pssst ... there's a giveaway at the bottom!)

Eternal Starling
Book 1
A love so strong, even eternity can’t separate them.

Evie Starling has lived a relatively uneventful life hanging out with friends, gossiping about boys, and driving her 1966 Mustang. All of that changes when she moves to Gunnison, Colorado, to start college and meets two mysterious men.

For centuries, Alex Night and Emil Stone have yearned for Evie—but they each have their own reasons for wanting to be with her. When both men claim to be her soul mate and tell her about an unbelievable past, Evie learns that she’s not the person she thought she was. Soon, Evie finds herself in the middle of an age-old battle between the Amaranthine Society—the soul protectors, and the Daevos Resistance—the soul destroyers. With a past she doesn’t understand, and a future rife with danger, Evie has to decide who she can trust. But Alex and Emil aren’t the only ones who want Evie, and her soul is about to become the rope in an eternal tug-of-war.

Eternal Echoes
Book 2
She thought she stopped the evil.

She thought she was safe.

Everything she thought was wrong.

Almost four months have passed since Evie Starling learned she was a Tracker and helped defeat a Daevos Clan that was taking others like her—but that wasn’t the end of the abductions. As an unknown evil emerges, Evie vows to help solve the mystery of the missing Trackers, regardless of the risk.

With new powers she doesn’t understand and can’t control, she turns to Alex and Emil, her two soul mates, for help. But her feelings for them both are tearing her apart.

As the world around her is thrown into chaos, Evie is confronted with what could be a destiny-altering truth. Will she accept her history, her memories, and her role in this life, or choose to ignore the echoes of her past?

Eternal Echoes Excerpt
by Angela Corbett
(Emblem of Eternity trilogy, Book 2)

I took a deep breath as I came out of the memory. I was getting better at keeping my flashback reaction less noticeable, but I still steadied myself against the gate. Alex noticed. “Are you okay?” he asked.
I nodded, my breath less ragged. “I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?” He came over and stood behind me, a commanding presence. His hands were a gentle weight on my arms as he turned me toward him. At first, he seemed to be looking for signs of distress, but as our eyes caught and held, I knew his thoughts were in other places, and mine were headed there, too. His hand slipped feather-light over my arms and down until they rested above my hips.
Like I was having some sort of out-of-body experience, I watched as my hand went up to his face, tracing the line of his jaw. “We shouldn’t be doing this,” I said in a very unconvincing way.
It wasn’t that I didn’t mean what I said. I did. And I still had enough blood flowing to my brain to vocalize it. But I was having a hard time convincing my rational side I shouldn’t be making out with Alex. Especially when my rational side was practically screaming that I’d kissed Emil last night and to be fair, I should also make out with Alex. My rational side told me I wouldn’t want a double-standard. My rational side had lost its mind.
“Why?” Alex asked, inching slowly closer, his eyes dark in a way that made my legs feel like pudding.
There were so many possible answers to that question, with reasonable arguments why we shouldn’t proceed, that I wasn’t sure which to choose. I started with, “What if the bracelet doesn’t work?”
Alex glanced down at my bracelet, giving a very slow smile I could only describe as predatory before eying me like he was preparing for an attack. Apparently a couple of centuries of sexual frustration will do that to you.
“It will,” he answered, still moving toward me.
            “How can you be sure?”
Alex’s mouth curved slightly in a smile part rapacious, part entertained. “I’ve been waiting a long time for a relationship with you, Evie. And for everything that comes with it. I wouldn’t have given you the bracelet if I wasn’t sure it would work. I gave it to you because I intend to put it to use.”
Sheesh! Judging by his dark, focused gaze, I knew he wasn’t kidding.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea.” I shook my head, like that would emphasize my argument and stop his sultry advances. It didn’t.
His arms went around me tight, pulling me to him. My chest crushed into his, the hard planes of his stomach obvious even through our clothes. He stared down at me, not loosening his embrace. My breath was shallow as I stared back, wondering how long it would be until we both lost all common sense. He moved his lips over my cheeks, the soft skin brushing wispy strokes over my face. When he got to my ear, he took the soft pad in his lips and nipped lightly, then whispered one word. “Why?”
Why? Why what? Had there been a question? I fumbled around in my head for what we’d been talking about. Oh. That’s right. Bad idea. This is a bad idea. Why is it still a bad idea? What was my list again? I did more fumbling and found one. “What about Emil?”
I felt Alex tense, his shoulders becoming taut under his shirt. “He’s not invited to this conversation.”
Geez! Alex had always been overbearing, but apparently when it came to sex, he was not only overbearing, but alarmingly primitive. Again, I attributed the aggression to decades of pent up frustration.
“Don’t you think he’ll be pissed?”
Alex kept kissing down my neck, and I moaned. His hands moved around to my stomach, unzipping my coat. He quickly discarded it on the ground.
“We all agreed to the rules,” Alex said, his hands moving lightly under my sweater, inching it up ever so slightly. I’d never been addicted to anything, but imagined this was how addiction started. A little at a time. Alex pulled my sweater over my head, then kept kissing back up my neck and along my jawline. “We’re not doing anything wrong.”
I looked at where our hands were, and the clothes slowly making their way to the ground. We were about to be doing things that were wrong in a very good way. “I guess it depends on your definition. Emil would think this is seriously wrong.”
The muscles at Alex’s jaw ticked, his eyes glittering with a combination of passion and anger. “I told you,” he said, moving swiftly, one arm sliding under my thighs, the other around my back. He lifted me, cradling me in his arms, and walked down the row of stalls to an empty stall at the end of the barn. Fresh hay was scattered in large mounds, creating a soft bed on the ground—albeit a scratchy one, but better than the dirt floor. He laid me down gently in the hay then straddled me, the years of want and need, written across his face. “We’re not talking about him.” With that, he was on top of me, the kiss aggressive. I could feel my soulmark burning, and my bracelet seemed to be giving off heat as well. If this kept up, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole barn burst into flames.

~ Excerpt ~

Han looked at her, his eyes as dark and depthless as the deepest part of the ocean. His gaze shifted to her mouth and she could have sworn she felt the pressure of his gaze on her lips. She moved forward a fraction, until there was nothing between them but sunlight. Then there was nothing between them at all. His lips were on hers, not claiming, not possessing, simply wanting. Needing.

Lilette had never known how full of need he was. How dark and empty the spaces in his soul must be. He drank her in like she was light and hope and he’d been a starving man all his life.

For Lilette, it was like his touch let her shine. Like she’d been shattered into a thousand specks of light and he brought her together—made her whole.

With a shudder that shook to his core, Han pulled away from her. He rested his forehead against hers, his breath ragged and his lips red. “Lilette.”

She closed her eyes as he said her name. Said it like he was cupping a bird in his hands and he’d set it free. She inhaled the breath that had carried her name. “Han.”

“It’s like no matter how hard I try, you’re all I can see.”

She held her hands together to keep them from trembling and betraying her. “Where does that leave us?”

“I don’t know.” Han closed his eyes and breathed her in. “You’re leaving for Haven. I’m going to stay here as an ambassador for Harshen.”

She nodded. “I’m glad.” She trusted no one else with this.
Han hesitated, and then kissed her briefly. “Be well, little dragon.” He turned and walked away.

Lilette watching him, waiting for him to move out of sight before she allowed her legs to go soft. Let herself sink into the loam. She didn’t cry. She just waited for the aching to fade enough to get to her feet and keep moving.

2013 Book Sales Numbers

This post is both an Indie Life post and an Insecure Writer's Support Group post :-)

When it comes to specific sales numbers, I've always been a little scared to share mine. And yet, I've always been very interested to read the sales data of other authors when they share it. So ... I guess it's time for me to be brave!

I'm sure everyone has a different number in their head when they think of how many sales they want to achieve in a year, or how many sales would make them feel like their book/s has/have been a success. To be honest, I didn't actually have a number in my head at the beginning of 2013. I had no goal I was aiming for in terms of sales. I really had NO idea what to expect from 2013, my first year as a full-time writer. So all I can say is that I'm THRILLED at the "magic number" I managed to reach last year! And that magic number is ...

...

...

...

10,000!!!

Yippee!!! Now, I know there are many indie authors selling way more than that in a year. So some of you are probably looking at that number and thinking, Well, I don't know how everyone else is doing, but at least I know I sold more than Rachel Morgan! But I look at that number and feel totally, awesomely, butterflies-in-my-tummy excited!

Anyway, I think it's interesting to see the breakdown of sales across the different online retailers, so I'm going to share those numbers, in case anyone's interested in looking at them. I've organized these numbers into two tables -- one that includes free downloads, and one that is paid titles only.

Note:
  • These numbers are EBOOK SALES ONLY. Print sales were rather pathetic in comparison - not more than 200 copies.
  • Amazon numbers are for the US and UK stores combined (I sell barely anything on the other Amazon stores).

TFG = The Faerie Guardian
TFP = The Faerie Prince
TFP = The Faerie War
PART I = Part I of The Faerie Guardian. Free, although it was $0.99 on the UK Kindle store for part of the year. Unpublished in October.
A to Z = An A to Z of Creepy Hollow Fae. Initially $0.99. Changed to free in October.

PAID TITLES ONLY, NOT INCLUDING FREE DOWNLOADS

PAID TITLES AND FREE DOWNLOADS

Amazon has always been the major player. I think that's the case for all of us. But for those of you who also publish on Apple and B&N, where do you sell more books? On Amazon, it looks like about a third of the downloads of my free Part I translated to sales of my first book. Is that good? I don't actually know!

~  ~  ~

Indie Lifers: Isn't it awesome to have almost instant access to your sales data? How did 2013 go for you? Are you happy with how your book/s did over the past year?

Insecure Writers: I started out as an insecure writer (and I still get insecure at times!) and after almost two years of publishing, here I am. SUPER happy with my sales so far and aiming to sell at least DOUBLE that number this year. And if I can do it, so can you!

THE LABYRINTH WALL Release Party - Monsters, a Free Book, and a Puzzle!

Welcome to The Labyrinth Wall Monster Party! The monster party blog fest is a celebration of The Labyrinth Wall book release, which is available now. So to join in the fun… The Labyrinth Wall author, Emilyann, has invited participants to post about a monster, share The Labyrinth Wall release information and jump around to read about everyone else’s monsters. Join the party by hopping around to check out the monsters, and have a blast!

My Monster...

I haven't spent much of my life thinking about monsters (the only monsters that entered my nightmares as a child were snakes and monkeys!), so the first thing that came to mind when I thought "labyrinth" and "monster" was the Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Harry had to navigate his way through a maze in order to get to the Triwizard Cup, and blocking his way was a Sphinx. The Sphinx is an Egyptian mythical creature that has the head of a human and the body of a lion. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry had to correctly answer a riddle the Sphinx gave him in order to continue safely.

Paperback: Delays on physical copies. Look for them later in January from B&N and Amazon

Readers have said:

"A fascinating tale of adventure, danger and self discovery. You will not want to put this one down as you are drawn into the quest for something as unknown and distant as a reoccurring, puzzling and incomprehensible dream."

"The Author created a very in depth world that left me even more curious about it."

Fun Fact:
(There are varying excerpts and facts to be found at sites participating in this event)

The Author talks about some off characters in the book…

“As much as I do root for and like the protagonist in this book, I really enjoyed a couple of her enemies too. It’s probably not a good sign for me to like villains, but I sometimes do. In particular, I like Rase, because she’s stuck with Araina, but they are opposites and drive each other crazy. Mysterious and surprising draw me in, and she has those qualities. Also Sir Riddles is terrible. I’d never want to meet him in real life, and yet he is a favorite too. He’s just cryptic, creepy and odd; the kind of character I can’t ever stop thinking about.”
