The Impatient Writer

Does this ever happen to you?

You have this trilogy (or pick any number) planned out, and you're writing number 1, which is cool and interesting and stuff (at least you hope it is), but what you ACTUALLY want to be writing is number 3, because that's where things gets really juicy/heat up, and it has all the awesome scenes that were the first ones that popped into your head and gave you this whole idea, but you CAN'T write that now because 1 comes before 3 (yes, it does. I'm a maths teacher, I know this stuff) and so you need to finish 1 FIRST. And then 2, obviously, so it's seeming like a looooong time until you can get your hands on 3, and will the passion you once felt for 3 still be there when you finally get together?

I'm trying to deal with this at the mo... Just thought I'd share :-)

In other radically-more-exciting news...

I got the idea from Colene Murphy to check the search terms that lead to my blog and post about the most ridiculous ones. This week they were mostly boring-ish. The most entertaining one there is:

"how to make your school uniform look hot if your fat" ~ Okay, the your/you're mixup aside (which SUPREMELY ticks me off!!!), I'm thinking it's kinda hard to make a school uniform look hot regardless of what size you are. I mean, come on. It's SCHOOL! And shouldn't you be doing your HOMEWORK instead of Googling stuff like that? <-- sorry, that would be the teacher in me coming out...

To see some far more entertaining search terms (eg. "sweet boobs". Yes. For real.) visit Colene's blog.

I guess it makes you think, if there isn't enough story to make number 1 exciting for me, then why am I writing 3 books?! I am about to go back through what I'm currently writing and add a few awesomesauce things ;-)

And, um, nice search term!

That happens to me sometimes. A few people suggest just go ahead and write what you're feeling passionate about in the moment. Though, I do feel that 1 and 2 do need to come before 3, and I get that guilt if I move on ahead of them.

Christine, I indulged myself a couple weeks ago by writing a few thousand words for the story I'm REALLY looking forward to writing. Now I'm back to trying to figure out how to make the earlier stuff exciting too!

Ha! I was just going to suggest you treat yourself to writing bits here and there of the 3rd while you're getting ppthe first ones done. I do that! But I will say, you won't lose the urge and desire to write that 3rd one. Actually, as your write the others the third may write itself in your head as you go and new ideas spring up and what not. So it's great to write those first 2 for more stuff for the 3rd! Win!

Just wait...you'll get some weird search terms...just keep an eye on it. Lol

I agree with Christine and Colene about just writing the scene that's echoing in your head. That's what I do. I know it might change, or it could keep me focused on the direction I want to go in.

Plus, if you write the scene, you're that step closer to finishing that 3rd MS. :)

I do that too. I guess you could write bits of it, if you want. We won't tell.

I've not yet written a triology, so I cannot relate. But I do like the search engine post :-) Yes, should be doing hw instead of googling that stuff :-)

Yes, I very much know this feeling from when I wrote my err, quintology? hehe. I don't know if that's even a word. But yeah, 5 books, all romance, all following the same characters... and I was obsessed until the very end when I'd written over 500k about these people.

Yea, I know this feeling. It can be frustrating. But I have to agree with Lucy. If you're bored writing book 1 then it's probably going to come out sounding boring!

Might be time to shake up the muse and get some exciting scenes into book 1 & 2, too. Or think if your trilogy really needs to be a trilogy. Could it be a duology? Do you really need all the scenes for books 1 & 2 that you're not excited about writing?

If it were me, I'd write #3 first just to get it out of my system. Yeah, it's not linear but it would totally help your character development arc when you are ready to move on to #1.
LOVE your cover, btw. Very, very cool. I do author interviews so keep me in mind if you need some extra publicity before your launch.

Ah yes, I have that feeling, too: too many stories that need to be told in a chronological order! I have a spin-off series I'm dying to write, too, but I have to write book 2 of the main series first--gah!

Lol! Rachael? Sweet Boobs? Now I have to check my blogs search phrases!

I'm bad enough when I get a shiny new idea in the middle of writing something else, not sure how I'd cope with a trilogy :-)

Write number 3, lol...My rule is write what's in your head, what is flowing out right that moment. It really makes for good writing. Also...maybe your 3 should be your 1. Starting with the most juicy part of the story is sure to hook the reader :) Hope you're having fun!!
