The Official Release of THE FAERIE PRINCE, the Favorite Fairytale Prince Blog Fest, and a Giveaway!

Happy book birthday to my newest baby, The Faerie Prince! Woohoo! I'm so excited for people to read it (and since I uploaded it a few days ago to make sure it was ready in time, a number of people have already found it!). If you're keen to read it, you can find it at the following places online, plus a few others:

~  ~  ~

In celebration of today's release, there's a blog fest happening where you get to tell people who your favorite faerie tale prince/hero is and why.

There are soooo many choices of awesome princes and heroes, both old and modern, and if I wrote this at a different time, I'd probably pick a different one. But right now, I'm going with ...

Flynn Rider from the animated movie Tangled

Why? I'm a big fan of the flawed character who messes up and then has to somehow redeem himself in order to win the love of the princess/heroine. After all, no one is perfect, right? Flynn Rider (a.k.a. Eugene Fitzherbert) starts out as little more than a thief. He thinks he can play Rapunzel with his infamous Smolder, but Rapunzel knocks him out with a frying pan instead (I'm also a fan of the heroine with guts!). Flynn agrees to take Rapunzel to see the floating lights purely for his own gain. But along the way, something changes ... He becomes a good guy. In typical hero fashion, Flynn/Eugene rescues Rapunzel from the evil enchantress. He and Rapunzel get married and live happily ever after--with much humor along the way.

So who's your favorite fairytale prince/hero? Sign up below and tell us between now and Sunday June 2nd!

In celebration, The Faerie Guardian is on sale for a limited time!

**GIVEAWAY**

There will be a giveaway running from now until the end of the blog tour (Sun 9 June). A giveaway where FOUR people could win something! The prizes are a signed copy of The Faerie Prince (or The Faerie Guardian, should the winner prefer that), an Amazon gift card, a mini book pendant and necklace, and a Creepy Hollow pin badge. Check out the pic below!
Giveaway is open internationally

Sign Up for THE FAERIE PRINCE Blog Tour and Release Day Blogfest

Hooray! We're just under two months away from the release of THE FAERIE PRINCE, and it's time to plan another blog tour! The book will be released on May 30th, and the blog tour will be held from June 3rd to 9th. If you'd like to take part, you can scroll further down this page and fill in the form.

If you share this image on your blog, it would be great if you could link back to this post (http://www.rachel-morgan.com/2013/04/sign-up-for-the-faerie-prince-blog-tour-and-blogfest.html)

I wanted to do something a little bit different on release day, so instead of just asking you all to do a generic announcement to tell the world that the book is available, I thought in addition to announcing the release of THE FAERIE PRINCE, you could also tell everyone who your favorite faerie tale prince is, and why :-) You can pick any prince/hero from any fairy tale, old or modern (and if you have an objection to posting about your favorite prince, you could tell us who your favorite princess is instead!). You can do this on release day or for three days after that, i.e. from May 30th to June 2nd, whichever day suits you best. If you're keen, scroll down and add your name to the Simply Linked list.

If you share this image on your blog, it would be great if you could link back to this post (http://www.rachel-morgan.com/2013/04/sign-up-for-the-faerie-prince-blog-tour-and-blogfest.html)

Add your link to tell us who your favorite faerie tale prince is on May 30th!
(or between May 30th and June 2nd, if you can't do May 30th!)

***THANK YOU***

And before you go ... here's a little teaser ;-)

The Year I Turned 18...

Life was full of 'firsts' in the year I turned 18:

  • I moved away from home for the first time.
  • I got my first real boyfriend (the guy I dated for 5 weeks when I was 15/16 doesn't count).
  • I had my first kiss (see the point above. How did I manage to date someone for 5 weeks and avoid kissing him? That should have been a sign, right? Rachel, you don't even want to kiss this guy, why are you with him?!)
  • I went on a taxi for the first time. (And I'm talking South African taxi here! See the picture below.)
  • I went on a train for the first time (in South Africa).
  • I applied for a job for the first time.
  • I fought with my best friend for the first time.
  • I drove a car for the first time.
  • I realised for the first time that doing badly in a test or exam wasn't that big a deal. Life did not end! (Who knew?!)

Usually more packed than this!

Oh my hat, this was almost 9 years ago. I feel old!!

The quad of Fuller Hall, the res I lived in.

The view from Fuller Hall over the city of Cape Town.

Can you spot me? No? Okay, scroll down ...

My best friend and me. The one I fought with. We're still best friends. And she's a bridesmaid for my wedding :-)

The Year I Turned 18 Blog Fest is in honour of the release of Cally Jackson's The Big Smoke, a new adult novel in which both main characters turn 18 and head off to university where they face new challenges and try to figure out who they are.

Ceara’s desperate for love; Seb’s desperate to get laid. Ceara adores reading novels; Seb hasn’t finished a book in years. Two strangers, both moving from small country towns to Brisbane – the big smoke. As they prepare to attend the same university, their paths seem set to collide, but they keep missing each other. Maybe fate is keeping them apart, or maybe it’s just chance.

When the semester starts, things get complicated. Ceara’s best friend withdraws from her, Seb’s closest mate turns into a sleazebag, and the relentless demands of university make their stress levels soar. Before their first semester is over, both Seb and Ceara will be forced to question who they are and what they want from their lives. Will they have the courage to find the answers, or will they crumble under the pressure? And when they finally meet, will it be love at first sight or a collision of headstrong personalities?

Never Surrender (Even When it's Seriously Hard Work!)

As part of the celebrations for the release of Elana Johnson's SURRENDER, I'm posting about a time I did not surrender!

As Theresa Milstein pointed out, in real life where we don't have heroic battles to fight, our 'never surrender' moments come from simply refusing to give up when confronted with life's day to day struggles. Heck, even getting out of bed in the morning is a struggle for me! (Well, it is dark and cold in the mornings now, so it's understandable, right?!)

But I've been thinking over the things I've been through in life, and I don't think there has ever been a time where I have striven so single-mindedly, had such a definite and clear goal, as in my matric year at school. Sheesh, I had NO life that year! I had always done well at school, so obviously I decided that I needed to get an A in every one of my subjects (how's that for an attempt at over-achievement?! Ha!). So, yeah. I had almost no life and worked REALLY, REALLY hard. I still look back and marvel at the amount of dedication I had ... (it didn't quite carry through to university!)

I did not surrender to exhaustion or stress, and I got there!

And now I've decided this post is a good excuse to unearth some old(ish) photos from my matric year.

The one and only school photo of me that isn't completely hideous!

Matric class of 2003 :-)

Matric dance. I'm not sure how my date would feel having his face plastered on this blog, so, yeah.
One of my awesome friends made me a calendar for every day while we were writing finals. Every day I got to open a little window and there was a chocolate with a message attached to it. Super cool :-) (And I saved every single message!)

Congratulations, Elana, on the release of SURRENDER!

First Loves Blogfest

Today I'm multitasking: I'm guest-posting over at Rach Harrie's blog:

and it's Alex J Cavanaugh's fabulous First Loves Blogfest!

~  ~  ~

First Movie - Fantasia
Possibly a strange choice for a young child (but then, maybe not?!). Having a musician for a grandfather, I was brought up with a love and appreciation of classical music. Add to that my love of fantastical creatures and stories, and it probably makes complete sense that I fell in love with this movie and watched it so many times the tape stretched!

First Music - The Spice Girls
As embarrassing as it is to admit, the first band/group I remember loving is the Spice Girls. Um ... yeah. Let's leave it at that!

First Book - The Famous Five: Five on a Treasure Island
The Famous Five books are the first full length books I remember reading (and loving) when I first learnt how to read :-) Doesn't every child dream about going on great adventures where the children are always the heroes? Well, I did!

First Person - The Physics Tutor
It feels pretty weird to write about this considering I just got engaged to an AWESOME guy who happens to NOT be the first guy I loved ... Kinda like I'm betraying him somehow! So I'll make this quick. I met the first guy I loved in my first year of university. He was a PhD student tutoring the physics course that some of my friends were taking. He also happened to be ten years older than me! We were together for over three years, but in the end things got (enter: cliché) complicated!
Now I am with a super guy who's about to become a doctor of biochemistry -- and I can't stop staring at the sparkliness on my left ring finger!

~  ~  ~

Thank you, Ninja Captain Alex, for giving us a reason to share our first loves so we can all get to know each other a little better :-)

Is It Getting HOT In Here?!

This awesome blogfest is hosted by Hope Roberson of Writing With Hope and Cassie Mae of Reading, Writing and Lovin' it.

The gist of it:
Those kissy scenes are challenging to write, but I love reading one when it's crafted so well it feels like I'm standing beside the characters, watching with inflamed cheeks as sparks fly between the two lovebirds.

Please share one of your favorite kissing scenes from a book you've read, from your own WiP, make one up, or write about one of your own memorable kisses. Then hop around to feel how sweet, romantic, or downright steamy other characters are getting smooched!

I look up and find him staring at me. His gaze makes me feel hot all over. I lift my hand and run my finger over the almost invisible scar on his chest. He shivers at my touch. Gently, he reaches out and cups my face in his hand, brushing his thumb over my cheekbone. I lean forward to meet his kiss. My hands slide down over his jacket and slip beneath the hem of his T-shirt. His skin is warm, smooth. I skim my fingers across his back, feeling the ridges of his spine and—

—that's where I have to stop, I'm afraid! The remainder of that sentence contains a spoiler - bonus points if you can guess what it is ;-)

What I did on my Summer Vacation Blogfest

Michael over at In Time... is hosting the What I did on my Summer Vacation Blogfest! Remember that essay you always had to write when you returned to school after the summer holidays? Well, this is it! (Except now it's not homework, it's something we want to do because we like writing!).

My Essay

This year I get a double summer holiday! That’s because while it was winter here I went off to England where it was summer, and now that I’ve been back a little while, we’re entering South African summer (which, just so you know, is far more of a summer than the English summer!).

I don’t handle sleep deprivation very well, so by the time I reached my friend’s home in London I was an exhausted, dizzy, smelly wreck. Fortunately, seeing sister + seeing friend + having a shower = a near cure for exhaustion.

We spent three days dashing around London seeing things like Big Ben, the London Eye, the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, The Tate Modern and Oxford Street (shopping! The window kind, mainly, considering that the Rand to the Pound was over eleven to one!).

After that I stayed a few nights in Oakley (Hampshire) with my grandparents, who unfortunately only have one spare room – inconveniently occupied by my parents at the time. So my sister and I shared a blow-up mattress in a study so small that the mattress filled the entire room... Imagine climbing off your bed and already being out of the door!

After the cramped mattress experience we spent some wonderfully restful time in Haytor (Devon) at my aunt’s large and comfortable country home. Here I visited a craftsmen’s guild, the Eden Project (amazing. You should go.), the Riverford Field Kitchen and even the beach!

And even though it was a wonderful holiday, by the time the plane coasted onto the runway in Durban I was thinking, It’s good to be home (and then we got to passport control and there was only ONE desk open for all of us South Africans to go through, and all I could think was, Typical...).

~ ~ ~

Sun 25 Sept: A photo on someone else's blog reminded me of something that happened just as we arrived at the Eden Project...

Gabrielle, The Authoress

As part of Gabrielle’s prize in the Power of Tension Blogfest, she won an interview on both my and Cally’s blogs (The Tension Blogfest? you ask. Wasn’t that, like, ages ago? Correct. But I’ve been out of the country recently, and before that... end-of-term-madness!).

So, let's get down to business!

I'd like to introduce to you all Julie Gabrielle Anne, all the way from Tennessee, USA (which is kind of far from South Africa...).

To set the scene, how long have you been writing and what type of stories do you write?

I’ve been writing since I was nine. I’d start a story, quickly get tired of it, and end up killing off the entire cast and tacking on “the end” just so I could say it was done. Not until I was fourteen did I start writing seriously. My favorite genres to write and read are humor, sci-fi, and action. Anything with big guns or big laughs :)

[At least you got to "the end". I only ever got a few chapters in and then got bored and moved on!]

Describe your favourite writing place.

My favorite place to write is at my desk. It’s older than me and came from my grandmother. I don’t like to sit at it, though. I have to sit on top of it, with my music going loud and my legs dangling off either side. It’s very comfy.

[Hmm, never tried sitting ON my desk...]

Are you a plotter or a pantzer?

I am both when I have to be, but I’m a pantzer by nature. It’s so much more fun to just dive in with no plan and start writing whatever crazy things come to mind. Sometimes, like with a prequel novel that I’m working on now, I have to plot because the novel covers twenty-five years, and I have to be careful not to mess up the timeline in the orginal novels.

[I'm with you on this. Pantzing comes more naturally to me too.]

Would you rather have a great plotline or fantastic technical writing? (No, you can’t choose both here!)

Definitely great plotline! You can always fix messy technical writing later, and it’s not as much of a headache as a disastrous plotline.

[Agreed.]

What's a completely random fact about you that most people don't know?

Hm. It drives me absolutely nuts when my younger siblings wrinkle the rug in my room. I can’t focus on anything else if the rug is crooked or has a lump in it.

[Haha, yup, that's pretty random!]

What was your favourite book as a child?

This one is an easy one. HOP ON POP by Dr. Seuss. It’s still one of my favorites. When I was learning to read, it was one of the few books I could read by myself and one of the first of Dr. Seuss’s genius books that I ever read.

[Ooh, I haven't read that one! Must go on the to-read-to-my-children-one-day list...]

If you were stuck in an elevator and had the choice of any writer, living or dead, to be stuck with, who would it be and why?

This is a tough one… Got it! Kate Brian. She’s the author who turned me onto romantic humor in YA, both reading and writing it. I think she’s a genius. In her Privilege series, the main character is a murderer and completely psychotic, but I still ended up rooting for her. What kind of crazy good writer can do that??

[Wow. I'll have to check out this Kate Brian.]

Out of all the characters you’ve ever created, tell us about the one you’d most like to meet in real life.

This is a close call between two characters from the same book, but I’d have to go with Darius Hanneman. He’s a cyborg turned con artist, teleporter, and fiercely loyal. He’s also a walking time bomb, almost always ends up getting somebody in trouble, and is never sorry. But on the rare occasion he can be sweet and sort of funny.

[Ok, I would be a little scared to meet this Darius dude!]

Have you ever based a character on a real person you know, and would you tell that person?

There is one character I based off a real person, but I never did and probably never will tell them. They’d be flattered to begin with, but when they found out who the character was… they’d be less pleased. Haha.

[Probably best to keep quiet then!]

Lastly (and most importantly): chocolate or ice cream?

*gasp* Is it even possible to survive with just one or the other? I love chocolate sooo much, but I’m ninety-nine percent certain I would expire without ice cream. Does chocolate ice cream count as chocolate?

[Hmm... Ok, you can have chocolate ice cream :-)]

~ ~ ~

Thank you, Gabrielle, and congratulations once again on an excellent entry in the Power of Tension Blogfest.

If you're interested in following Gabrielle's writing journey you can find her on her blog, The Authoress | Of A Writerly Sort.

We have a winner!

Yes, the time has finally come to announce the The Power of Tension Blogfest winner!
(I won't waste any time waffling...)

First Prize:
Congratulations, Trisha!

I make it to the corner store with minutes to spare.

Rushing down the kitchen and bathroom aisle, I dart around the corner and see the storeroom door. Suppressing a yell of triumph and relief, I fly at the door and rattle the handle—it turns. I fall on it, push, slip inside. My breaths are harsh in my ears, but at least they’re still coming.

Trisha has won a $15 Amazon voucher plus an interview on my blog and Cally’s blog OR a 1st chapter beta read by both Cally and me. Let us know what you’d like, Trisha!

Second Prize:
Congratulations, Gabriellan!

For the past week, I’d had a countdown clock of sorts in my head. Now, the countdown clock read 00:00:01.

The door to my cell opened. Slowly, the steamy interior of the cell cleared.

“Angelica.”
“That’s not my name.” I made my voice as cold as I could.

Gabriellan has won a $10 Amazon voucher plus an interview on my blog and Cally’s blog OR a 1st chapter beta read by both Cally and me. Let us know what you’d like, Gabriellan!

Third Prize (is a tie!):
Congratulations, Damyanti!

I mean to kill. I know it is only a matter of time today, I’ve chosen my spot well.
A man on the hospital escalator going down watches a woman on her way up. A staircase separates the two escalators, perhaps for busy doctors who can’t get enough cardio into their week. The man turns, raises his head to gaze at her trim little figure. She does not notice him watching her, nor does he know I hold him in my sight.

Third Prize (is a tie!):
Congratulations, Sarah!

Emily walked the bird block. Large almost-birds hissed and whispered in the trees—Bird hater, bird hater.

This last block to school belonged to the birds for a week now, though no one else heard them. Emily didn’t look at them. If she did, they would slide around on the branches like shadows. She wouldn’t be able to tell where their beaks ended and their heads began. The largest of them would open his mouth in a great yawn, and for a second, Emily would feel all swallowed up. That’s what happened the first day. The day after they’d lost the softball championship.

Damyanti and Sarah have each won a $5 Amazon voucher.
