I finished the first draft of my first novel ever!
And that only took me like... um, 15 months!
(6 months longer than planned!)

PS. Don't talk to me about the long slog of editing and revisions that now lies ahead of me. I'm still in my happy place!
PPS. And I won't tell you the current word count 'cause you'll FREAK!

  5. Congratulations on this milestone, Rachel. We're new friends, you and I, so perhaps you don't know that it actually took me twenty years to write my first one. Marriage, children, careers and life in general caused me to push my dream of being a writer to the back-burner. Thankfully, five years ago I really began to feel the mountain of regret that I was staring at in my old age if I never tried to finish the book. That pushed me to not only finish it, but to see it published as well.
Enjoy that feeling, my friend, and much success with the milestones which are to follow...

  8. Congrats! This is a huge milestone! Enjoy it.
And now worries about how long it took you to write it. Life happens. It took me about as long to finish my first draft too.

  9. Congratulations!! Doesn't it feel wonderful??? I finished my first draft of my first novel in November and it felt SO good. I took about a month off to detach myself from it and get ready for revisions (I had notes from two of my crit partners on the whole thing). (and don't worry, it took me a year and a half to write mine- I don't count the 6 or so months I didn't write while we bought a house...so technically 2 years if you count it).

  12. Woohoo, congrats to ya! Yeah, don't be in a big rush to revise and edit--enjoy your high for now. Your WIP may have to sit for a while anyway. :)

  18. Now I REALLY want to know what your word count is, ha ha!

Congratulations Rachel! Finishing a draft is quite a milestone and your first step toward publication. You're already ahead of a bunch of people who spend year after year saying that "one day" they'll write a novel but not doing it.

Enjoy the moment and best of luck with the ms!
